William D. Howarth retired from the Chair of Classical French Literature at the University of Bristol in 1988, and was Honorary Professor of French at the University of Warwick from 1988 to 1998. He holds an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Bordeaux, awarded in 1987. He has published mainly in the field of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century French drama and theatre history, including most recently Molière: A Playwright and His Audience (1982); Corneille: "Le Cid" (1988); Beaumarchais and the Theatre (1995); and, as editor, French Theatre in the Neo-Classical Era, 1550-1789 (Theatre in Europe: A Documentary History) (1997).
