Carol Murphy is Professor of French at the University of Florida. Her research interests include twentieth-century French prose and literary theory. In addition to her 1982 book on Duras, Alienation and Absence in the Novels of Marguerite Duras, she has published The Allegorical Impulse in the Novels of Julien Gracq: History as Rhetorical Enactment in "Le rivage des Syrtes" and "Un balcon en forêt" (University of North Carolina Press, 1995). Her current project concerns the encounter between Jean Paulhan and the artist Jean Fautrier in Paris during the Occupation.
