Annie Smart is Associate Professor of French at Saint Louis University. Her publications on the intersection of gender and politics include "Ties that Bind: Motherhood, Economy and State in La nouvelle Héloïse" in L'Esprit Créateur (Summer 1999), and most recently "The École saint-simonienne's Outrage to Public Morais" in Nineteenth Century French Studies (Summer 2005). Her current research focuses on representations of female civic virtue in Revolutionary theatre.
