Erckmann-Chatrian dans la presse satirique française du XIXe siècle
Abstract
Erckmann-Chatrian are authors almost unknown to the general public today, but they had some success during the Second Empire and the beginning of the Third Republic. We propose to study the reception of Erckmann-Chatrian in the French satirical press of their time, based on a few titles:Le Bouffon, La Caricature, Le Charivari, Le Don Quichotte, L’Éclipse, Le Grelot, Le Journal amusant, Le Scapin, La Silhouette, Le Tintamarre and La Vie parisienne. We will focus on the caricatures and the critical articles that appear in them or accompany the drawings from 1864 to 1896, in particular the reviews of works and the dramatic criticisms. We will see that Erckmann-Chatrian are very often presented as Alsatian novelists, then as “Siamese twins” and playwrights, and that they are not mocked very much, or only moderately.
