This article traces French modernist poets‘ uses of the prose poem as a vehicle for exploring a new aesthetics during the first decades of the twentieth century. Pierre Reverdy and Max Jacob redefine the image as the basis for their cubist-influenced art of the prose poem. Léon-Paul Fargue blends memory, literal description and mythology in his prose reveries. Pierre Mac Orlan‘s eccentric scenes of Montmartre life recall the photographs of Eugène Atget.

John C. Stout est un spécialiste de la poésie française des vingtième et vingt-et-unième siècles. Auteur de nombreux articles portant sur cette poésie, il va publier en 2018 le livre Objects Observed : the Poetry of Things in Twentieth-century France and America (University of Toronto Press). Il entame actuellement une étude de la post-poésie aux États-Unis, au Canada et en France.
