Evelyn Birge Vitz is a Professor of French at New York University. She has written widely on medieval and Renaissance literature, as well as on religious matters and gender issues. Her books include: Orality and Peiformance in Early French Romance (1998), Medieval Narrative and Modem Narratology: Subjects and Objects of Desire (1989), The Crossroad of Intentions: A Study of Symbolic Expression in the Poetry of François Villon (1974); she also wrote a book on food in the Christian tradition: A Continuai Feast (1985, 1991). She is currently working on a book on the influence of the liturgy on medieval vernacular literature.
