H.T. Barnwell

H. T. Barnwell is Marshall Professor of French Emeritus at the University of Glasgow, having held earlier appointments at the Universities of Montpellier, Sheffield, Edinburgh, and the Chair of French in the Queen' s University of Belfast. Since 1985, he has been a Fellow of the Institute of Advanced Research in Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Birmingham. He is author of books (including The Tragic Drama of Corneille and Racine: An Old Parallel Revisited [Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1982]) and scholarly articles on seventeenth-century French drama, Saint-Evremond, and Madame de Sévigné, and has edited works by Corneille and Racine. He has served on the editorial board of French Studies, was President of the Society for French Studies (1978-1980), and founder-chairman of the Society for Seventeenth-Century French Studies. In 1982 he was presented with a Festschrift, Form and Meaning: Aesthetic Coherence in Seventeenth-Century French Drama.
