Sima Kappeler, after studying in Switzerland, went to the United States in 1986 and took her Ph.D. in comparative literature at Harvard University; she wrote her thesis, "First Encounters: Rereading the Other," under Barbara Johnson. She is currently teaching in the French Department at Ohio State University. Her areas of specialization are French and German literatures with a focus on the representation of women in the nineteenth-century novel.
