Author Biography

Dora Wiebenson

Dora Wiebenson practiced architecture before tuming to architectural history. She received her Ph.D. from New York University in 1964, and taught architectural history at the University of Maryland and the University of Virginia, where she was chairman from 1977-1979. She has published books on late nineteenth-century utopias (Tony Garnier: The Cité industrielle); on the Greek Revival (Sources of Greek Revival Architecture); on French gardens (The Picturesque Garden in France); and on architectural theory (Architectural Theory and Practice from Alberti to Ledoux; The Mark J. Millard Catalogue, vol. I, French Publications [for the National Gallery]). In addition to these publications, she has been actively engaged in the promoting of higher education for architectural historians, and served for fourteen years as chairman of the education committee of the Society of Architectural Historians, during which time she published and edited guides, brochures and essays to be used as educational aids. She retired from teaching in 1991, and is currently editing a book on the history of Hungarian architecture.
