Michael Bishop has published many essays and books on modern French literature and culture. Recent studies include The Contemporary Poetry of France (1985), Michel Deguy (1988), René Char: les dernières années (1990), and Philippe Jaccottet (1991). He is completing a book on nineteenth-century French poetry and preparing anthologies and a critical study of contemporary women's writing in France.
