Poets and Other Makers: Agathon‘s Speech in Context

Suzanne Stern-Gillet studied philosophy at the University of Liège (Belgium) and classics at the University of Manchester (UK). Previously having taught in universities in continental Europe and the United States, she is now Professor of Ancient Philosophy at the University of Bolton. Having early in her career translated Gilbert Ryle‘s The Concept of Mind into French and published in the tradition of analytical philosophy, she now concentrates her research on ancient Greek thought. She is the author of Aristotle‘s Philosophy of Friendship (Ithaca, 1995) and of some twenty articles (in English and in French) on ancient concepts of selfhood and the aesthetic views of ancient Greek thinkers. In collaboration with Kevin Corrigan she has edited Reading Ancient Texts: Essays in honour of Denis O‘Brien (vol. I: Presocratics and Plato, vol. II: Aristotle and Neoplatonism). She is currently writing a monograph on Plato‘s Ion for Cambridge University Press and is preparing a translation and commentary on Plotinus‘ tractate III.6 [26] for the Editions du Cerf. She has been the recipient of grants and awards from the British Council, the Fulbright Commission and the Arts and Humanities Research Board of the British Academy.
