Abstract

This article promotes awareness of the ongoing prevalence of homophobia within our Canadian culture and suggests ways of resisting heterosexism within our libraries while creating safe welcoming space for our LGBTQ youth. The article also highlights noteworthy Canadian queer titles, resources for LGBTQ patrons and allies, and definitions library staff should be familiar with.

Author Biography

Madeline King, Dalhousie University

A native of Halifax, NS, Madeline King graduated with a MLIS degree from Dalhousie University in May 2013. Lover of literature and film, she has a BA with Honours in English and minor in Film Studies from Saint Mary‘s University. Having a keen interest in teen services and queer culture, she hopes to put her passion and talents to work in a public library someday soon.
