Fanfiction is a valuable means of subverting existing literature to create LGBTQ+ representation where it is lacking. Taking examples from the popular Harry Potter series, this paper discusses how and why people participate in fandom culture, and how young people are becoming increasingly critical of and responsive to popular culture.
