About the Journal
Focus and Scope
Tooth & Claw is an annual presentation of undergraduate works related to topics in the history of science and technology. It is composed entirely of student-written pieces, reviewed and edited by a team of their peers at the University of King's College. Entries range from essays to plays, exploring ancient ideas equally alongside the modern. Together they challenge the dizzying pace of scientific advancement by taking time to interrogate the seemingly obvious and build compelling stories out of what is left behind.
Peer Review Process
Students from across all years of study, most of them enrolled in the History of Science and Technology program, respond to an open-call for reviewers. No less than three reviewers will be assigned to read each submission. Tooth & Claw uses a double-blind review system—reviewers will not know whose work they are evaluating anymore than the author will know them.
The journal is open to a wide range of entries, but in general a successful entry must show:
- Relevance to themes in the history of science
- Original thinking
- Persuasiveness
- Clarity of expression
- Cohesive presentation
- Proper spelling and grammar
Plagiarism will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Submissions should be accurately cited and include bibliographies.
The selection process will commence after January 17th and will take no more than two weeks. Authors will be notified as to whether or not their entry has been accepted by the beginning of February. Successful candidates will be sent a proofed version of their piece by February 14th, which they must approve by February 19th. Proofs will be limited to spelling, grammar, and adaptations to Chicago style citation. The editor may include suggestions for other minor changes at his or her own discretion. Authors can track the status of their submission on the 'Review' tab of their registered account on the open journal system.
Publication Frequency
Tooth & Claw will be published collectively once finalized versions of all entries have been prepared. Online and printed publications are expected to come out in early April.
Open Access Policy
This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.
General
Tooth & Claw is now accepting submissions for its 12th volume, publishing in 2015!
Tooth & Claw was first published in 2003. Since then there have been eleven volumes. The journal is produced through the efforts of the History of Science and Technology (HOST) Society at the University of King's College.
