  • The submission file is a Microsoft Word file named LastnameFirstinitial.doc (or .docx).
  • The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; and uses italics for emphasis, rather than underlining. All illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end. The text uses the Chicago Manual of Style Author-Date system for bibliographic citation.
  • Faculty sponsor form. Each submission requires the sponsorship of a university/college faculty member. The JUE is committed to the mentoring of undergraduates at all stages of research.

Faculty sponsors should email a brief letter of support either directly or as an attachment with the student’s submission. The sponsoring letter should indicate that the sponsor has read and critiqued the manuscript on its content, method, grammar, and overall presentation. Information on the original purpose of the paper (course assignment, conference, etc.) is appreciated.

In addition, assert that the research adhered to institutional, departmental, or disciplinary ethical standards. Finally, confirm that the planning, execution, and writing of the manuscript represents primarily the work of the undergraduate author(s).

I, [FACULTY SPONSOR'S NAME] certify that I have observed The Journal for Undergraduate Ethnography‘s submission guidelines and hereby recognize [STUDENT'S NAME] work as original. I am the voluntary and willing sponsor of this work.

Include full contact information (this will constitute an electronic signature).
  • Include information sheet described in point 8 of author guidelines.

Richtlinien für Autor/innen

This journal accepts submissions by email only. Please follow these guidelines:
  1. Manuscripts must have an undergraduate as the primary author. Graduates may only submit an undergraduate work within the first twelve months after their graduation. Papers may be co-authored with other undergraduate students.
  2. Original papers are preferred, however papers that are under review elsewhere may be submitted for consideration as well. If you submit work that is under review elsewhere, tell us to which journals, conferences, or other venues you have submitted it, when, and what its current status is.
  3. Papers should be 7,000-9,000 words long, including an abstract of 150-200 words, notes and references. All manuscripts must be submitted in Chicago Manual Author-Date style in 12 point Times New Roman font and should be sent as a Microsoft Word File. Please name the submission file as follows: LastnameFirstinitial.doc.
  4. In the email subject line, write JUE SUBMISSION.
  5. Provide email addresses for the author(s) and faculty sponsor.
  6. Please include a faculty sponsor form (see Submission Preparation Checklist).
  7. Manuscripts must be submitted via email to mcgarry@undergraduateethnography.org
  8. Please attach a separate sheet that includes: author name(s), current address(es), current phone number(s) and name and address of university/college, name and address of faculty sponsor's university/college (if different than author's), and author's permanent address and phone number (if different than current ones).
  9. Since JUE is an online only publication, it is easy to feature illustrations and figures (photos, maps, sketches, diagrams, tables). In the first instance, these can just be inserted in the Word document. Number and caption illustrations, include references in the text (e.g. "(see Figure 1)"), and ensure that you have permission to use any photos of identifiable people or any illustrations that you did not create.
  10. Author and sponsor should expect to receive confirmation from the Editor within two weeks. If not, please write back to make sure it was received.
  11. Each manuscript will be reviewed by one member of the Senior Editorial Board. (Authors' identities are not blinded.)
  12. If the Editor returns a manuscript that requires revisions, the author(s) is (are) responsible for making the necessary changes and resubmitting the manuscript to the JUE. Sometimes you may have to revise manuscripts more than once.
The complete process of publishing in The Journal for Undergraduate Ethnography from submission to publication is explained in this article in vol. 9, no. 2.

Articles

The JUE encourages undergraduates or those who have graduated within the past twelve months to submit manuscripts for consideration. Manuscripts must be based on original research conducted using ethnographic methods, on any topic in the social sciences.
