The importance of reading beyond the struggle

Cassandra Larose

Abstract

It is important to provide readers with materials that reflect a wide range of life experiences and realities. Offering materials to young adult readers that include diverse characters and stories is important as they work to broaden their world view and build their own identities. In addition to the importance of including own voices materials, stories written by those with lived experience, it is also crucial to offer materials that deal with all aspects of lived experiences of diverse and marginalized groups. In addition to materials that deal with struggle, library and information professionals should look to offer materials that explore the wonderful and mundane aspects of a whole life to accurately reflect the people and communities they serve.
