Call for Submissions: Halifax Writes

2024-05-09

The Dalhousie Review has been a part of the Halifax community since 1921 and we’re about to see some changes at the journal. We’re taking the opportunity to highlight some of our local writing with a Special Issue on Halifax Writing. We think there is some really excellent writing coming out of Halifax and we’re excited to help share it!

Here is some context:

Both Anthony Enns (the current Editor) and the recently departed Managing Editor, Lynne Evens, have left us on solid ground and we’re grateful for their work these past years. We use “we” here because there is a new and larger team heading up TDR:

First and foremost, the inimitable Stephanie Domet has already taken up the position of Managing Editor. Stephanie is (among many things) a writer, journalist, and co-founding director of AfterWords Literary Festival here in Halifax.

Bart Vautour (writer, editor, and associate professor in Dal’s Department of English) will take over as Editor in July.

We’re also adding a new layer to the team with a set of genre-specific Associate Editors from within Dalhousie’s writerly community:

Heather Jessup will be Associate Editor: Fiction.

Sue Goyette will be Associate Editor: Poetry.

Erin Wunker will be Associate Editor: Non-Fiction.

The Dalhousie Review is a creative-writing journal and we publish three issues each year. We are interested in hearing from Halifax-based writers for a special issue:

  • POETRY: Poetry submissions may consist of up to five poems on any subject and in any style.
  • FICTION: Fiction submissions may be up to 8,000 words in length.
  • NON-FICTION: Non-fiction submissions may be up to 4,000 words in length.

All submissions should be saved in a single file (.doc format) and sent to Dalhousie.Review@dal.ca with the subject heading: HALIFAX WRITES. The attached file should include a cover letter that contains contact information (name, mailing address, and email address) and a short biographical note.

Please title your file following this naming convention AUTHOR LAST NAME, AUTHOR FIRST NAME, TITLE OF SUBMISSION, DATE SUBMITTED

All submissions should be previously unpublished, and simultaneous submissions are strongly discouraged. For consideration in the “Halifax Writes” Special Issue, please submit by 15 June 2024.

Our contributor fees are small. We’re working on it, we promise. Currently, contributors receive two complimentary copies of the issue in which their work appears. They also receive a monetary payment based on the following schedule: $5/page for poetry and flash fiction (maximum $25), $5/page for fiction and non-fiction (minimum $25 and maximum $50), and $25 for interviews and reviews. We are applying for additional funds for this Special Issue (and subsequent issues) and will “top-up” the contributor’s fees if we receive the funding.

We look forward to hearing from you! Do get in touch if you have any questions or concerns. Feel free to share this news and the call for the special issue.

All the best,

Your New TDR Team!
